Artist Beatrix Adams knows exactly how she's spending the summer before her senior year. Determined to follow in Leonardo da Vinci’s footsteps, she's ready to tackle the one thing that will give her an advantage in a museum-sponsored scholarship contest: drawing actual cadavers. But when she tries to sneak her way into the hospital’s Willed Body program and misses the last metro train home, she meets a boy who turns her summer plans upside down.

Jack is charming, wildly attractive . . . and possibly one of San Francisco’s most notorious graffiti artists. On midnight buses and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who Jack really is—and tries to uncover what he’s hiding that leaves him so wounded. But will these secrets come back to haunt him? Or will the skeletons in Beatrix’s own family’s closet tear them apart?

Jenn Bennett blew me away with The Anatomical Shape of a Heart (alternate title: Night Owls). A story of love and art, [this book] instantly grabs you from the very beginning and leaves you awestruck with its incredible writing and captivating storylinetwo misunderstood artists who fall into an adventurous romance filled with sweet and heartwarming moments that will leave you addicted and intrigued with every turn of a page.

"Feeling alive is always a risk."

Imagine meeting someone who suddenly turns your life upside down: Beatrix "Bex"; peculiar, odd, and incredibly talented with a strange fascination for the human anatomy, meets charming and dashing Jack on a late night bus, who also happens to be the notorious anonymous graffiti artist who's been vandalizing the city with intriguing single words (that carry such an emotional impact) in golden paint. It's like that Journey song about strangers and late nights and boulevards, just throw in some spray paints, cadaver art, prismacolors, HB pencils, anatomical shapes of bodily organsmatched with some midnight rendezvouses and hyped adrenalineand you've got yourself a unique yet classic romance between two artistically headstrong yet wise for their age teens.

"That sounds dangerous." [...]
"The best things in life are."

Bennett's characters are undeniably amusing, and realistic, with immense depth which immediately strikes you from the beginning. [This author] isn't one to toss in superficial characters and cliche plot lines, but ratherother than realistic teens that lie deep beneath willful personasa number of witty and delightful dialogues coupled with a little bit of flirty-flirt and smooth moves (by dashing Jack), mysterious family secrets, and heartclenching plot-twists that will surely keep you on your toes.

Bex is another addition to my favorite heroines. She's a determined, quick-witted oddball, with her eyes set on the prize inspite of certain shortcomings, which is a greatly admirable trait. Plus, she's the smart and sensible kid of the family. Jack, mysterious yet incredibly charming, will capture your heart the moment he's mentioned [in the book], but deep down, he's got secrets he's terrified to share underneath his rockabilly swagger, which will make you feel for him more.

[This book] will turn you into an emotional sap and make your heart flutter at the same time. A total page-turner and an addicting novel, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is a read you should never miss out on (and this is a recommendation coming from a reader who rarely likes YA novels). Rest assured, you won't regret it. If you've read I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios and loved it, then all the more reason to pick this one up!
